Electronics Incorporated manufactures and distributes certified Almen strips. We oversee and are responsible for every aspect of the manufacturing process to ensure that EI strips are of consistent quality, give repeatable results, and are shipped promptly. EI can provide strips to any specification—from standard MIL specifications to rigid aerospace specs. Our Almen "A", "N" and "C" strips in Gradessm 3, 2, 1, and 1-S are pre-qualified and ready-to-use.

How to Select Almen Strips by Type and Grade

By Type: Almen strips are classified into 3 types: 'A', 'N', and 'C'. They differ in their thickness but have the same width and length. The type of strip is usually specified by the part designer.

• "A" strips are used for medium intensity applications. "A" strips are predominantly used for shot peening with cast shot or cut wire shot.
• "N" strips are used for low intensity applications. "N" strips are used usually for glass bead and ceramic bead peening.
• "C" strips are used for high intensity applications.

By Grade:

• Grade 3 - Bulk (A-3, N-3, C-3)
  Grade 3 strips are guaranteed to meet the requirement of MIL-S-13165. Type A-3 strip is guaranteed to meet National Stock Number NSN 6635-00-512-1892. Grade 3 strips are economically-priced and bulk-packaged.
• Grade 2 - Standard (A-2, N-2, C-2)
  Meets AMS-S-13165. Excess oil is removed from the Grade 2 Standard strips. The strip surfaces are then visually inspected for score marks, scratches, nicks, burrs, pits and rust. Strips are certified using a sampling inspection plan for hardness, length, width, thickness, and flatness. A dated certification of compliance is issued, signed and archived. We then package "A" and "N" strips in groups of 50 and "C" strips in groups of 25.
• Grade 1 - Premium Grade (A-1, N-1, C-1)
  Meets SAE J442. Electronics Incorporated performs all the inspection and packaging operations listed for Grade 2 strips. Strips are sample inspected for flatness (±.001-inch) on each side. A dated certification of compliance is issued, signed and archived. The Premium Grade 1 strips are identified by batch control number which provides traceability.
• Grade 1S - Special Grade (A-1S, N-1S, C-1S)
  Meets SAE AMS 2432B. In addition to requirements for Premium Grade 1, the Grade 1S strips are inspected to ±.0005-inch flatness tolerance of AMS 2432B. A dated certification of compliance is issued, signed and archived.

The Advanced Almen Gage has:

• An easy-to-read display. Our gage has a large digital display that is English/metric convertible and can be rotated so you can perform the Almen strip tests standing or sitting.
• A patented magnetic grip and foolproof end stops. The strip is mounted for accurate measurement so no spring or finger holding force will corrupt the reading accuracy. Since all of the holding force is concentrated at the support balls, absolutely no strip distortion can occur. (U.S. Patent No. 5,297,418) Our end stops assure placement within the intended measuring point on the strip.

Almen Gage Jr.

If you don't need the high precision of a digital gage, we offer the Almen Gage Jr. in an analog style that's ideal for general purpose shot peening and blast cleaning.

The small size and light weight of the Almen Gage Jr. (4" tall and less than 1/2 lb. in weight) make it convenient for operators to use anywhere.

The Almen Gage Jr. has a 1 3/4" dial indicator with .0005 graduations for easy reading of the Almen strip arc height.

The Almen Gage Jr. also has many of the same features of the Advanced Almen Gage including:

Almen Strip Holders

The Electronics Incorporated Almen test strip holders are industry standard J442 Almen holders. Special styles can be custom ordered including a variation with end feet. Alternate configurations of Almen holders are available on special request. All holders meet dimensional surface requirements of SAE J442 and are hardened to Rockwell C 58 or higher. Screws for strip attachment are supplied with each block. Additional screws are available.

All holders are thru-hardened to minimum HRc 58 so you can re-finish the surface to maintain surface flatness requirements.

We offer threaded and non-threaded holders - choose the design of Almen Holder that makes mounting your test strips easiest for you.

Note: MIL-S-13165 has been cancelled. The drawings of strips, holder and gage were in inches while SAE J442 measurements are metric. EI can supply to MIL-S-13165 at an additional cost.

Flapper Peening Products

Flapper peening (also called "roto-peening") is a shot peening process that's ideal for peening in small and hard-to-reach areas.

Flapper peening, first developed by 3M Corporation in the 1960s for U.S. Army helicopter field repair during the Vietnam war, is widely used in the aerospace industry today. Flapper Peening Training is available from Electronics Inc.

Flapper Peening products can be purchased invidually or as a kit. Our flapper peening kits provide a convenient method of small area local repair without the need for a blast cabinet. The basic kit includes the unique components to conduct precision peening according to the highest military standards.
